Congressman Gonzalez Leads the Way
An article from CBS Sports highlighted the efforts of Congressman Anthony Gonzalez as he leads the movement of crafting federal legislation around the topic of Name Image and Likeness. What is unique about Congressman Gonzalez is that he himself is a former Division I athlete from Ohio State, who also spent time in the NFL as a slot receiver. He was elected as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and began serving his term in January 2019, and his timing could not have been better. It is reassuring that the person leading the charge actually lived life as a student athlete trying to make ends meet. He understands the struggles of what these athletes have to go through, and has connections in both the NCAA as well as at the professional level.
The article pointed out about how legislation will typically take 1-2 years to pass, in today's environment. However, with Florida rapidly pushing forward with their NIL legislation, something will likely have to be done this summer. More and more movement around the topic of NIL is happening around the country, and it is for the benefit of all involved that this be addressed at the federal level, and the right person is leading the way.
